They are thus anxious about the threats and vulnerabilities that may be going undetected in their networks. And rightly so.  Attacks are growing in frequency, severity and sophistication. As our world becomes ever more connected, every business is becoming a digital business. There&rsquo;s no place for complacency or ignorance anymore.  It&rsquo;s grim up north  Alarmingly, Newcastle tops the national table for cyber security problems. Over 93% of businesses in Newcastle and surrounding areas have reported losses or breaches of data. These hacks usually stem from poor or outdated network security.  It pains these organisations when they find out these attacks could have been easily detected and prevented.  With regional stats like this, it was hardly surprising when Labour&rsquo;s Shadow Digital Minister and Newcastle MP, Chi Onwurah reported that she had been hacked a few months ago (despite being in charge of her party&rsquo;s policy on cyber-crime&hellip;).  The average cost of significant security breaches for small organisations is crushing, ranging from &pound;75,000 - &pound;311,000. For larger organisations it is even more so, a despairing &pound;1.46m - &pound;3.14m.  Such attacks are so painful because they prove catastrophic for not just profitability, but in some cases to long-term viability &ndash; trust from customers is hard to win, but easy to lose.  Executives need to take back control  Many business leaders feel overwhelmed by the scale of the risks posed by rapidly evolving cyber-security threats. &nbsp;  However boardrooms can, and must take back in control of an area traditionally seen as the remit of the IT department.  It is often difficult, but by no means impossible, for leaders to assess the extent to which their network may be vulnerable. &nbsp;  The problem is that organisations are unsure about what they should do to protect themselves, and more importantly, their customers. &nbsp;  It&rsquo;ll never happen to you, right?  To quote Cisco&rsquo;s former CEO and chairman, John Chambers:   &lsquo;There are two types of organisations: ones that have been hacked, and ones that don&rsquo;t know they&rsquo;ve been hacked.&rsquo;  Experienced and reputable business leaders are often embarrassed when they find out a network breach and data theft has occurred. Because they failed to detect vulnerabilities from within their own supply chain. I&rsquo;ve architected complex designs, technology road-maps and risk mitigation strategies, for some of the largest blue-chip companies in the world. More recently, I&rsquo;ve been responsible for managing and executing a company acquisition, as well as developing the associated earn out mechanics.  Background  Prior to life in the commercial world, I spent my time working for the armed forces in some of the most hostile places on earth. Whilst serving, I worked extensively with computer networks, as well as designing blast walls to absorb rocket energy. I also worked as a specialised military diver and spent half my life underwater searching for dead bodies and other unpleasant things. To let off steam I spent much of my time on the judo mat and in the boxing ring, and in fact, participating in any physical and mental challenge that presented itself. Digital Workplace        Has Unified Communications Ushered the Death of Email?                                                                by Steven Forrest                                                                                                                                                                                          Today we heard the sad news that email pioneer Ray Tomlinson&nbsp;passed away&nbsp;at the age of 74. Tomlinson proposed the idea of electronic messages that could be sent from one network to another in 1971.  In the midst of The Cold War, where (seemingly probable) nuclear apocalypse would force human civilization underground, the application of email would serve an essential purpose.  Nowadays, it&rsquo;s the hunting ground of hackers, spammers and clutter bugs, all of which distract us from the very thing email is supposed to help with &ndash; efficiency!  The explosion of collaboration  Although, in an era where usage of the top four messenger apps has overtaken the top four social networking apps, it&rsquo;s difficult to envisage a future where email is not redundant&hellip;  The desire to communicate, or to phrase it more accurately, collaborate, in real time in an easy, intuitive and consistent manner is growing exponentially.  &ldquo;Messaging is one of the few things people want to do more than social networking&rdquo;- Mark Zuckerberg, 2014  This explains the meteoric rise of the likes of&nbsp;WhatsApp,&nbsp;Slack&nbsp;and&nbsp;Facebook Messenger. Linkedin recently&nbsp;revamped its messaging&nbsp;functionality to resemble a more collaborative feel.  Even Twitter, infamous for its 140-character limit removed the aforementioned restriction to try and&nbsp;tap into this need to collaborate.  These freemium, consumer-driven collaboration apps serve their purpose, however from a business point of view, they&rsquo;re a nightmare&hellip;  Collaboration still needs to be controlled  Many workers are using free apps to set up work-related groups or &lsquo;rooms&rsquo; (in the absence of official company alternatives) to instant message (IM), share collateral such as presentations, videos, images and other company records and property &ndash; to combat the geographical barriers that used to hold back team productivity. The report is bursting with the latest information on security threats and trends, as well as predicting what we can expect in the near future.  Over the coming weeks, our security experts here at Forfusion will be highlighting and analysing some of the valuable insight on the key areas in the report.  We&rsquo;ll delve in to some of the more technical aspects, whilst providing guidance on the solutions and technologies that can assist our customers in protecting themselves from the ever changing nature of cyber-crime.  I don&rsquo;t think there&rsquo;s any doubt that having a robust security posture is high (if not at the top) on the agenda of every business, big or small.  At Forfusion, we always examine both the technical and business reasons why our customers should (and even in some cases shouldn&rsquo;t) embark on any given IT solution or project.  So, putting technical intricacies aside for a moment, I thought it would be useful to look at some of the compelling reasons why adopting a flexible and robust security posture can be good for business.  Attacks are growing in frequency and severity   More UK businesses than ever are facing the threat of losing confidential information through cyber-attacks. The 2015 Information Security Breaches Survey found 90% of large businesses and 74% of small businesses experienced a cyber-security breach within the last year.  The average cost of significant security breaches for small organisations ranged from &pound;75,000-&pound;311,000. For large organisations the equivalent cost was &pound;1.46m-&pound;3.14m. Such attacks could prove catastrophic for the profitability, and perhaps more worryingly so, the overarching viability of any business.  Good posture = good business   Concerns over risk and cost too often prevail over recognising how effective security infrastructure and best practices can enable competitive advantage, a product differentiator, a brand asset, and a business opportunity.  Adopting the right approach to security requires bold and strategic thinking. By taking a business benefits orientated stance, most organisations can articulate the positive financial impact of mitigating cyber-risks, which in turn can empower business leaders (and help them sleep better at night!).  Good risk management requires a balance of understanding, investment and decision-making. As cyber-security threats rapidly evolve, it is often difficult for organisations to assess the extent to which they are vulnerable and what they should do to protect themselves.  For business leaders focused on the implications of cyber risks on their bottom line, affordable cyber protection that is appropriate to the scale of their business and reflects the reality of the risks they face, is essential.  Businesses should recognise that effective cyber security cannot be attained by simply deploying security products and solutions. It is not a firewall, IPS or multi-factor authentication service. It is a shift in corporate mind-set and can only be driven by leaders of the business.  Where to start   Start by understanding your vulnerabilities (outdated software or OS, long-term passwords, BYOD threats) and how mitigating actions can help your business&rsquo; operational and financial performance. Executives need to take back control   We put boardrooms back in control of an area traditionally seen as exclusively the remit of the IT department. We want to move on from headline grabbing scare stories to talk about the benefits of a robust security posture. In a world of ever evolving, sophisticated and pervasive cyber threats, managing your posture represents an opportunity to exploit a source of competitive advantage.  Embracing a robust security posture as a pillar of &lsquo;business as usual&rsquo; activity can be both a selling point to stakeholders and customers. You can directly improve your organisation&rsquo;s operational and financial performance by reducing elements such as risk contingent reserves and insurance policies. From that opening statement, you can probably deduce I&rsquo;m a DSEI newbie! I knew there&rsquo;d be plenty of military hardware on display, but the sheer scale of this expo is impressive.  In amongst all the guns, bombs, tanks, warships, missiles, fighter jets and F1 cars (think Williams are going to declare war on Mercedes!), there is an area dedicated to communications and security.&nbsp;Whilst on a smaller scale to most of the other zones, there are many interesting products and technologies on display.  Modern conflicts can now no longer be fought just on the battlefield, cyber warfare and by association cyber security, now play major roles in prosecuting and preventing conflicts. Secure communications underpins all our military operations whether on home or foreign soil. The technologies which enable this are constantly evolving and adapting to new threats, to keep our forces safe and to ensure continuous operations.  I was interested to see some of the products our partners at Cisco were bringing to the show and viewed some really interesting demos. It&rsquo;s fascinating to see how the Internet of Everything (IoE) and the concept of Fog Computing is being adopted in specific solutions to support military operations.  The widespread adoption of IP based systems by forces around the world enables the adoption of many solutions, which once would have been the preserve of the private sector.  As if we hadn&rsquo;t already been overwhelmed by the Cloud, now we have the Fog! Fog Computing is a relatively new term and describes a distributed computing infrastructure in which some application services are handled at the network edge in a smart device and some application services are handled in a remote data centre e.g. in the cloud.  The goal of fogging is to improve efficiency and reduce the amount of data that needs to be transported to the cloud for data processing, analysis and storage. This is often done for efficiency reasons, but it may also be carried out for security and compliance reasons.  Cisco has developed a range of smart edge routing platforms, which enable multi-access (wired, wireless or LTE) in a ruggedised form factor, which also include on-board computing power to enable Fog processing.  When deployed in a metropolitan infrastructure these devices enable smart cities, by enabling services such as smart lighting, parking and traffic monitoring.  When deployed in a military environment such as a warship and linked to an IoE enabled communications fabric connecting ship borne sensors, with remote sensors on other platforms (helicopters, drones etc.), Fog Computing can ensure only critical information is passed to operators. This ensures systems don&rsquo;t become overwhelmed, and allows for&nbsp;faster tactical decision making.  Fog Computing has the potential to make all our lives better, there are environmental benefits from easing traffic congestion, and leading us directly to the next free parking space &ndash;and more importantly, in a combat situation, it will undoubtedly save lives.  My first day at DSEI has very definitely been an eye opener, and I&rsquo;ll close by highlighting why Forfusion has a presence there this year (through our partnership with NDI). My role encompasses vendor and product alignment, engineering capability and strategic partner selection.  Industry experience  Since leaving the RAF in 2005, I&rsquo;ve worked for some of the largest SI&rsquo;s and technology vendors in the world. This afforded me a fascinating insight into how IT worked or rather didn&rsquo;t work, in some of the UK&rsquo;s largest commercial and public sector organisations. I specialised initially in network and security infrastructure, gaining a solid understanding of the importance of the network as an enabling platform for delivering world-class applications and collaboration services.  As the world moves towards the third&nbsp;Platform of IT; where mobility, cloud, big data and social platforms are going to play a huge part in shaping all of our futures, I try to ensure Forfusion&rsquo;s strategic partners are aligned on the same journey and have solutions to match our customers\' expectations.  Background  I developed a passion for technology during a 14-year career as an Electronics Engineer in the RAF, working on everything from valve driven amplifiers (yes valves!)  to the latest solid state, microprocessor powered radar systems. The RAF allowed me to experience first-hand how powerful today&rsquo;s modern integrated systems can be; at the heart of it all, digital computers providing critical real-time information to save lives and keep the nation secure.  Favourite quote    &ldquo;Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? He&rsquo;s a mile away and you&rsquo;ve got his shoes.&rdquo;  Billy Connolly  One of my all-time heroes and so much more than a comedian. Now sadly suffering from Parkinson&rsquo;s disease I saw him live last year, and it was inspirational to see someone so clearly robbed of their on-stage physical exuberance, still able to elicit side-splitting laughter through his warmth, intelligence and wit.  Other interests  As a father of three, my leisure time is at somewhat of a premium. So, when not performing the role of chauffeur, butler, UN peacekeeper or cat herder, I like to try and keep fit either down the local gym or by playing football. I also enjoy the odd round of golf &ndash; only when the weather is good, mind. Finally, I find reading is a great way of relaxing, so I try and end the day with a few pages of John le Carre or Tom Clancy. How it began  Realising that I was going nowhere fast in the retail industry, where I had been working since I left school, I decided to join the military in 1998.  I had friends who had recently joined and I knew they were loving it. So after a bit of soul searching, I decided the time was right to pay the military careers office in Newcastle a visit.  The only problem was deciding whether to join the Royal Navy, which was significant to me, as my Grandad had served in the Navy during the Second World War, or the Army, where most of my friends had already joined.  After a long chat with the Sergeant, I joined the Royal Signals as a Communications System Technician &ndash; a decision which would prove to be one of the best I had ever made, as IT grew in importance in not just the military, but day-to-day life in general, as the years progressed.  Most of my military life was spent in Germany, with the only exception being my last five years when I was offered a unique role within the Joint Services Signal Unit (JSSU) back in the UK.  Civvy Street  I was placed into a civilian team as an embedded support engineer and shortly afterwards I began working directly for that team.  This concept was completely alien to me, as I had spent the previous 11 years in mainstream Regiments, working to strict routines. Although, as the weeks passed, I started to enjoy what I was doing more and more.  After deciding that I liked my new lifestyle, I submitted my notice to terminate and started to look towards the next step in my career.  What if&hellip;?  I suppose many of us feel anxious upon the conclusion of their military careers, a fear of the unknown maybe. Personally, I was lucky to find myself in the enviable position of having 5 years of civilian &ldquo;work experience&rdquo; before my exit.  Nonetheless, there was always that thought of &ldquo;what if it all goes wrong?&rdquo; &ndash; a niggling feeling at night, having put my wife, kids and house at risk from the day I submitted my notice and I needed to ensure I gave myself the best chance I could.  During the final year prior to leaving, every service member is offered a 3 day workshop to give you an insight into what to expect when you do start looking for work. It covers CV writing, interview technique, placing you on the spot in front of your peers to see how you cope under scrutiny. One of the key objectives of this workshop is to identify transferable skills. It was at this point that I really realised how much a career in the forces had given me.  Skills to pay the bills  Traits such as management, leadership, teamwork, personal discipline, confidence &ndash; to name but a few &ndash; all come to the forefront when I started breaking down what I had accomplished during my time.  Add to this the sheer amount of experience and qualifications I had gathered over the years and I soon started to realise how desirable I had become.  All of the qualities that were nurtured in me during my military life are used on a daily basis: organisation, time management, the ability to adapt to ever changing workloads and requirements, negotiation and communication skills are all used daily and effectively. Even the ability to tolerate differing personalities so not to disrupt the working environment comes into play every now and again!  Thinking back to the time before the Army, I can honestly say I am a completely different person to who I was back then, and even though I was at a management level, I would have struggled with many of the situations I find myself in today.  I have now been out of the Army and have been working at Forfusion for almost nine months. This is a company which I have found to be very supportive of the Armed Forces and who actively recruit former members due to their backgrounds.  Forfusion has given me a chance to prove myself even though I had been out of its main line of work for a few years. A chance I was grateful for and I thoroughly enjoy the challenges it has presented to me.  Each day presents new challenges, and I feel we&rsquo;re able to deal with them more effectively due to the skills and professionalism developed during our time spent in the forces. Full Name*Email Address*Company*Job Title*I would like to recieve the latest news and insights from Forfusion.Book now                                                                                                                                                                             An Engineer&rsquo;s perspective:  Earlier I talked about some of the very high level differences between Cisco Nexus (NX-OS) and Catalyst (IOS) switching, and I provided an overview on some of the main NX-OS specific features.  This blog aims to expand on the overview, and will hopefully allow you to get to grips with common tasks on IOS and how they translate into NX-OS.  This post is the first of a five part blog series which will consist of easily digestible overviews and some practical configuration (config) examples.  All of the information in this blog series can be found on the Cisco DocsWiki, which is a great resource for both Cisco NX-OS and IOS.  For this example I will use the Cisco Nexus 7000 and Cisco Catalyst 6500 to draw a direct comparison. In this engineer&rsquo;s opinion, they are the most similar out of the two ranges. In fact, before the Cisco Nexus 7000 was first brought to market, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 series typically fulfilled its role (that of core and aggregation switches) in the Data Centre space.  Before I go into the key differences between the default configurations, I&rsquo;ll outline two biggest differences (in my opinion):  Interfaces are labelled in the configuration as Ethernet. There aren&rsquo;t any speed designations.
A user can execute show commands in configuration mode without using the do command in IOS.
The following three tables outline some of the specific differences.  Table 1: Initial system setup    Table 2: Default configuration differences related to interface types and configuration parameters  Table 3: Key differences related to L2 switching features and protocols.
