Like Forfusion, the military have the training and experience to push bleeding edge technology to its limits; however, these aren&rsquo;t the only attributes that we find people with a military background offer us:  1. They have been tested in highly demanding and pressurised situations  2. They take responsibility for their actions and get things done first time  3. They have unrivalled experience and excellent personal qualities  4. They learn quickly, picking up new skills and adapting with ease  5. They are self-disciplined, motivated and get a task done on time  6. They are skilled in planning, organising, teamwork, communication, man management and leadership  We recently recruited a member of the Royal Air Force for all of the above reasons and asked him to blog about how he found the transition from service life to joining Forfusion:  As I was coming to the end of my long but gratifying career in the RAF I started to really think about what was next on the horizon and where I would find work.  I joined the RAF in July 2002, not knowing what lay ahead. My reasons for joining were a simple choice between University after my college efforts or a suggestion from a mate to try out the military. I really wanted to work and earn so I chose the latter where I went on to train as a Ground Electronics Technician.  During my time I was employed at three different posts starting at RAF Northolt working as an IT maintainer, then moving to RAF High Wycombe involved in more IT operations and finishing at JSSU employed in a role working with a civilian team as a Network Administrator.  After being in an Institution for 12 years and not knowing what the outside world held, I was pretty nervous and apprehensive about the transition. I didn&rsquo;t know how I would manage without the Military support and security? I did my best to ensure the transition was as painless as it could be; I went to careers fairs, attended courses, studied, passed exams and used a career consultant for my CV development.  During my last six months; maybe even before this, I started looking for roles and uploaded my CV to multiple job sites. I received a lot of interest from recruiters and applied for about a dozen roles, four of which I attended Interviews. Even though the roles were what I was after, working in the Private sector didn&rsquo;t really appeal to me.  At a Security Cleared Jobs Expo I met a company that specialised in communications solutions and had a practice dedicated to Government work, they had a significant proportion of ex-forces staff and the company was led from the very top by people that knew what I was going through, I was very keen to get on board.  The company targeted service leavers like myself and I was grateful for the interest they showed in me, they understood the concerns I had and were able to put my mind at ease. They weren&rsquo;t the first company to offer me a role; my first role was a major name in the Defence and Intelligence sector but took a long time in processing my application and didn&rsquo;t provide the feedback I needed. Forfusion however, eradicated any fears I had by demonstrating a personal, swift and practical approach communicating with me regularly. Forfusion understood and took into account my pending contract termination from the RAF and within less than a week of receiving my offer I started work.  Being at Forfusion has been a revelation; the work really appeals to me, the working atmosphere is great and my colleagues are very helpful. I can&rsquo;t thank the company and the people who recruited me enough. I would recommend anyone in a similar circumstance as myself to pursue employment at Forfusion. My role encompasses vendor and product alignment, engineering capability and strategic partner selection.  Industry experience  Since leaving the RAF in 2005, I&rsquo;ve worked for some of the largest SI&rsquo;s and technology vendors in the world. This afforded me a fascinating insight into how IT worked or rather didn&rsquo;t work, in some of the UK&rsquo;s largest commercial and public sector organisations. I specialised initially in network and security infrastructure, gaining a solid understanding of the importance of the network as an enabling platform for delivering world-class applications and collaboration services.  As the world moves towards the third&nbsp;Platform of IT; where mobility, cloud, big data and social platforms are going to play a huge part in shaping all of our futures, I try to ensure Forfusion&rsquo;s strategic partners are aligned on the same journey and have solutions to match our customers\' expectations.  Background  I developed a passion for technology during a 14-year career as an Electronics Engineer in the RAF, working on everything from valve driven amplifiers (yes valves!)  to the latest solid state, microprocessor powered radar systems. The RAF allowed me to experience first-hand how powerful today&rsquo;s modern integrated systems can be; at the heart of it all, digital computers providing critical real-time information to save lives and keep the nation secure.  Favourite quote    &ldquo;Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares? He&rsquo;s a mile away and you&rsquo;ve got his shoes.&rdquo;  Billy Connolly  One of my all-time heroes and so much more than a comedian. Now sadly suffering from Parkinson&rsquo;s disease I saw him live last year, and it was inspirational to see someone so clearly robbed of their on-stage physical exuberance, still able to elicit side-splitting laughter through his warmth, intelligence and wit.  Other interests  As a father of three, my leisure time is at somewhat of a premium. So, when not performing the role of chauffeur, butler, UN peacekeeper or cat herder, I like to try and keep fit either down the local gym or by playing football. I also enjoy the odd round of golf &ndash; only when the weather is good, mind. Finally, I find reading is a great way of relaxing, so I try and end the day with a few pages of John le Carre or Tom Clancy. Full Name*Email Address*Company*Job Title*I would like to recieve the latest news and insights from Forfusion.Book now                                                                                                                                                                             Although the Cisco Nexus platforms have been around for a while now they are not commonly deployed outside of the data centre, this blog gives a high level overview of some of the main differences between Nexus and Catalyst switching.  What is NX-OS?  Cisco Nexus switching platforms are at heart L2\\L3 (with a L2 bias) switches, when viewed from a Classical Ethernet (CE) perspective. Whilst there is continued support for all of the features that you would expect from a CE switching platform (VLANs, Trunking, VTP, Rapid-PVST, MST, Etherchannel, LACP (802.1ad), PVLANs, UDLD, IGPs, BGP, FHRPs, etc&hellip;) the Nexus platform also supports some entirely new features including Fabric Extenders (FEX), virtual Port Channel (vPC), FabricPath, OTV (Overlay Transport Virtualisation), VDCs (virtual device contexts (N7K)) Native FC (Fibre Channel) switching, FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet) and FCIP (Fibre Channel over IP) to name but a few.  With these new technologies at their disposal, does Cisco intend for the Nexus switching platforms to eventually replace Catalyst iOS switching platforms altogether? In my opinion, Nexus and Catalyst IOS switches cover completely different market verticals; Catalyst switches continue to be aimed at Campus L2\\L3 switching, whereas Nexus is traditionally aimed at datacentre switching.  Where do I use NX-OS?  There is the potential to justify a Nexus 5K or 6K in a larger campus network, but certainly not as an Access layer switch (there are some nexus platforms that could fulfil this role, the Nexus 3K and 4K, but in my opinion these are not typical data centre switching platforms).  Although typical campus networks may have a large server room (or small data centre, depending on the way you look at it) the design guidelines that would apply to a data centre still apply here (albeit on a smaller scale) in terms of FC SANs and Blade based compute power. In a typical campus server room, an N1Kv will probably be a more common sight (figuratively speaking) than, let&rsquo;s say a 5K.  Nexus switching and its associated technologies typically bring to together the main components of a data centre: Storage and Compute power. This is evidenced by the support for typically SAN only FC and its many flavours (Unified Fabric), and more importantly its integration with the various server platforms, and specialised CNAs (converged network adapters).  Let&rsquo;s look at three of the Nexus specific technologies that are roughly analogous to the CE Access layer, Distribution layer (Aggregation) and DCI (Data Centre Interconnect):  vPC  vPC does not require VSS or Stackwise to form a multichassis port channel, whereas VSS and Stackwise maintain a single control plane and multiple data planes, vPC peers retain individual control planes with control plane synchronisation performed by CFS (cisco fabric services).  A vPC provides the following benefits:    Allows a single device to use a Port Channel across two upstream devices.  Eliminates Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) blocked ports.  Provides a loop-free topology.  Uses all available uplink bandwidth.  Provides fast convergence if either the link or a device fails.  Provides link-level resiliency.  Helps ensure high availability.    FabricPath  The Cisco implementation of MAC in FabricPath routing, similar in many ways to TRILL (Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links) and uses IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) to perform routing at L2.  FabricPath has the following benefits:    FabricPath is extremely simple to configure.  A single control protocol is used for unicast and multicast forwarding.  Switches that do not support Cisco FabricPath can still be attached to the Cisco FabricPath fabric in a redundant way without resorting to STP.  Loop prevention and mitigation is available in the data plane transparently.  Cisco FabricPath frames include a time-to-live (TTL) field similar to the one used in IP, and a reverse-path forwarding (RPF), similar to PIM (Protocol Independent Multcasting).  Because equal-cost multipath (ECMP) can be used the data plane, the network can use all the links available between any two devices.  Frames are forwarded along the shortest path (SPF) algorithm to their destination, using IS-IS L2 routing.    OTV  Designed specifically for the DCI as an alternative to VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Services) and AToM (Any Transport over MPLS) etc&hellip;, OTV transports L2 over L3 (MAC over MPLS over GRE over IP) allowing for multipoint to multipoint L2 connectivity between data centres, by leveraging IP multicast.  The key points of OTV are as follows:    OTV is supported on a number of devices including the Nexus 7000 and 1000v CSR.  Essentially a L2 VPN over IP.  Has built in enhancements to help scale a DCI.  Is configured as a client side service and doesn&rsquo;t have to be provisioned by an SP (Service Provider).  Designed for services requiring L2 connectivity such as virtual machine workload mobility (vMotion).  Optimises ARP (address resolution protocol) flooding over the DCI, by using proxy ARP/ICMPv6 ND (neighbour discovery)  Is the demarcation point for STP.  Can carry multiple VLANs without a complex design.  Can transport both IPV4\\6 broadcast and Multicast control plane protocols.    As you can probably see from this overview of just three core Nexus platform technologies, that they fit in closer in Data centre than they do in a campus LAN.  In Summary  When looked at in isolation the Nexus switching platforms provide a solid core of alternative switching technologies, however the true benefits of the Nexus platforms can be seen when used as part of the UCS (Unified Computing System) ecosystem, to form a unified datacentre fabric for both SAN, LAN and DCI.
